If you searched Google for the "guitalin" instrument played by Sufjan Stevens and it brought you to this website, you are in the right place. This is the temporary landing space for Mayfield Instruments. My name is Nathan Smith and I'm a full-time piano technician. My late grandfather, Lyle Mayfield invented the guitalin in 1962. As of Fall 2023, there are plans to continue production in 2024 for release in early 2025. Please bear with us as we transition to a new website. Below is a short family video of my uncle, Layne Mayfield and my grandfather playing the very first guitalin ever built. It was supposed to be a toy guitar for Layne, but it sounded so good, grandpa kept it in his collection. Our goal is to continue to improve the quality of future instruments while maintaining the idiosyncrasies they possess. It would make Lyle so proud to know his instruments finally made a mark on the world and we want to continue sharing the joy of his legacy with you! Thank you!
